Supporting FRDC’s Health Benefits of Seafood research

Fishing Industry NSW Inc supports FRDC’s latest research on the health benefits of eating Australian seafood.

FRDC, on behalf of the International Coalition of Fisheries Associations (ICFA), has released a comprehensive scientific review examining more than 10,000 research studies from the past decade. The findings of their research confirms that eating at least two serves of seafood each week (a serve equals 100-150 grams) as part of a balanced diet provides significant health benefits throughout every stage of life.

The research highlights that regular seafood consumption supports heart, brain and overall health, while providing important nutrients that are difficult to obtain from other foods. It also found strong evidence that eating seafood during pregnancy can improve health outcomes for both mothers and babies, including supporting infant brain development and reducing the risk of several pregnancy-related complications.

The report also outlines emerging evidence linking seafood consumption to improved mental health, diabetes prevention, bone health and athletic performance. While fish oil supplements may provide some benefits, the research concludes that the greatest health gains come from eating whole seafood as part of a healthy diet.

As the peak body representing the commercial fishing industry in NSW, Fishing Industry NSW Inc is committed to supporting and sharing trusted, science-based information that promotes the value of sustainably harvested Australian seafood and supports informed consumer choices.

We encourage consumers, health professionals and seafood businesses to explore FRDC’s free online resource, which includes the full report, fact sheets and a series of informative videos explaining the latest research.
